Vinyl Flooring: The Best Floor For Small Camper Vans

  1. First Step: A Solid Wooden Base
  2. Why I Chose Flexible Vinyl Flooring
  3. Why I Don’t Insulate Under My Floor
  4. Finishing My Minivan Floor

I recently installed a nice vinyl floor inside my little camper van. But how do you know which type of floor you need? In this post, I’m going to explain what made me choose this flooring type and what things you should consider before making your floor.

First Step: A Solid Wooden Base

If your van doesn’t have one already, you need to install a wooden floor. It will serve as a solid platform for your bed, kitchen and all the other things that you place on the ground. You also need your floor to support your weight. I chose a plank that is 8mm thick. I measured out the floor of my van, I made a blueprint on paper and I used that to draw the outline on my wooden plank. Then I simply cut it out.

Why I Chose Flexible Vinyl Flooring

On top of your wooden base floor, you should put a top floor of your choice. Not only is it more aesthetic, each type of floor has its characteristics. Do you want your floor to cancel out noise? Do you want it to be waterproof? How durable do you want your floor to be? What is your budget and your skillset? After I weighed my options, I decided to buy a 2m x 2m roll of flexible vinyl with a print that resembles a plank floor. Here’s why:

  • Very easy and quick to install
  • Waterproof surface
  • Easy to clean
  • Cheap

Why I Don’t Insulate Under My Floor

Since my Peugeot Partner is only a small van, I cannot waste any space. This minivan is not high at all, so I save headroom by not putting a layer of insulation under my floor. As I will mostly travel in summer, I probably don’t need that level of insulation. If you were to live in a very cold climate all year round, insulating might be a higher priority for you.

Finishing My Minivan Floor

When I had my base floor done and I bought a roll of vinyl, I just had to place my base floor upside down on the backside of my flooring material. I could easily draw the outline of the floor. Finally, I used a simple cutter to cut out the shape of my floor. For now, I won’t use glue or tape to hold the upper layer in place. It stays in place thanks to the shape of my van floor.

I’m really confident that I chose the best and most durable floor for my minivan. I like to keep it very simple and budget friendly. It was also the only feasible option, as I didn’t want to figure out how to install parquetry or solid vinyl planks. As always, you should decide your type of flooring based on your own needs and preferences.

See you later!
